How accurate are Planned Parenthood STD blood and urine tests?
I was told that I would have to get tested every six months for up to ten years to find if I am truley clean from sexually transmitted diseases. Can you say paranoid?
This is standard practice for any Md when there is possible exposure. Many STDs have been known to stay dormant in the system for months and years. Herpes and HIV have been known to stay dormant for months and years without ever having a symptom. They aren’t being paranoid at all. Once you become sexually active with multiple partners it’s a good thing to be tested every 6 months.
Hm I had sex with a woman yesterday and although I used a condom all the time I neglected the use of any protection when I executed cunnilingus…in other words when I “went down on her”.
I know the risk of catching an STD via Male to Female Oral sex is low but it is still present. I am really worried about it and I was wondering how long would it take for me to start showing symptoms? Herpes, Chlamydia, Gonorrhea and so on.
Please help me. Thank You in advanced.
Simple answer, you could get symptoms in a few days or never. Even if you are carrying something.
The term Condyloma Acuminata stands for Genital warts. One of the commonest sexually transmitted infections known to man, condyloma acuminata is a scourge to all those who get infected by it. The consequences of the infection are not just restricted to genital warts. Anyone who gets infected also carries the risk of developing genital cancer in the long run. There are many risk factors which ought to alert you to the risk of this infection.
Condyloma Acuminata is caused by a family of viruses. There are around forty strains of the virus which are known to cause this infection. These viruses are collectively termed as the Human Papilloma Virus family. The viruses generally spread through the sexual route, but they are known instances of transmission through oral sex and even by infected hands. Most of the infections are caused by two strains of the virus. There is a vaccine available which gives you protection against condyloma acuminata. The vaccine is called Gardasil and if you are a woman between nine and twenty six years of age, it is a wise choice to get yourself vaccinated with this.
As I mentioned before, there are some risk factors which you should be aware of. If you became sexually active at a young age, it is a risk factor for developing the infection as well as developing cervical cancer later in life. Do you have multiple sex partners? This poses a huge risk of contracting condyloma acuminata. Having sex with strangers also makes the chances of contracting this infection high. If the person you are having sex with, has a history of an STD, you have much higher chances of getting this infection.
According to statistics, the infection will show symptoms only after three months of the sexual contact. In this phase you might still transmit the infection to others without knowing it. This is why you must take precautions while having sex. Using a barrier contraceptive decreases the chances of transmitting the infection although the chances are never eliminated completely. You must also go in for treatment if you or your sex partner has condyloma acuminata. The treatment may not eliminate the virus completely, but it reduces the chances of developing cancer. Treatment also decreases the chances of spreading the infection.
Symptoms of condyloma acuminata are genital lesions, itching and discharge. You might notice warts in and around your genitals. You may see them as large fleshy masses which look like a cauliflower. In some cases you may just see gray colored bumps in the infected areas. The lesions are generally accompanied by a lot of itching and discomfort. You might have an urge to scratch the lesions and pull them out. You should not do this as the infection will only spread if you break off the warts. You might even transmit the infection with your hands in such a case. If you are pregnant and having an infection you might notice a lot of warts which bleed continuously. Otherwise, these warts are prone to bleeding when you have sexual intercourse.
Scientists have suspected, but there is now enough evidence to prove, that circumcision reduces a man’s chances of contracting the HIV virus through heterosexual contact by a wapping 50 per cent.
The findings, from two large studies conducted recently, offers some real hope that the deadly virus’s relentless attack on sub-Saharan Africa can be slowed.
“It does have the potential to prevent many tens of thousands, many hundreds of thousands and perhaps millions of infections over coming years,” said Dr. Kevin De Cock, director of the World Health Organization’s department of HIV-AIDS, on Wednesday after announcing the findings.
While these trials only looked at infection rates for men, the hope is that fewer infected men would lead to lower HIV rates among women as well. A study currently being conducted, funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, is expected to shed some light on that question in the fall of 2008 when the results are revealed.
The two clinical trials, in Kenya and Uganda, were halted prematurely by their primary supporter, the U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease, when a review showed enough conclusive proof that circumcision works to lower the risk of infection.
“While the HIV-AIDS research community will continue to strive for a prevention technique that safely protects everyone all of the time, we are pleased to find a strategy that has the potential to significantly reduce new HIV infections in sub-Saharan Africa,” said the institute’s director Dr. Anthony Fauci.
The Kenyan study found a 53 per cent reduction among circumcised men aged 18 to 24. The Ugandan trial revealed a 48 per cent reduction for circumcised men aged 15 to 49.
“There’s no real doubt anymore about the magnitude of the effect of male circumcision in reducing risks for HIV acquisition,” University of Manitoba’s Dr. Stephen Moses said in an interview.
Moses was a joint-investigator in the Kenyan trial, which was partially funded by the Canadian Institute of Health Research.
These reports confirm an earlier South African study showing a 60 per cent reduction in new HIV cases in circumcised men when compared to uncircumcised. Additionally, they support the observations many in Africa have made for years, that infection rates are significantly lower among circumcised men.
Dr. Frank Plummer, director of Canada’s National Microbiology Laboratory in Winnipeg, and co-author of the first scientific paper in the New England Journal of Medicine in 1986, says these recent trials are a definite step in the right direction.
“I think this proves this can be a major strategy for HIV reduction,” he said from Winnipeg.
As Fauci explained, it’s believed a foreskin left intact raises the risk of HIV infection because it is full of a cell-type called Langerhans, perfect targets for the virus. Additionally, the delicate mucosal tissue of the foreskin is subject to “micro tears,” which would allow easy access for the infection.
As promising as these findings are, there are potential pitfalls.
For one, health care systems in Africa are not all equipped to perform medically safe circumcisions on a mass scale.
“The cost of doing that is unlikely to be borne by these mostly poor countries themselves. So it would have to be subsidized from outside, by outside donors,” Moses said.
But Dr. Alan Bernstein, the president of the Canadian funding agency, noted that if faced with the choice of funding treatment or prevention, prevention is the way to go.
“Treatment is extremely expensive — the antiretrovirals — and at the moment it’s only available to treat a very, very small proportion of individuals, particularly in Africa,” Bernstein said. “The best approach would be prevention.”
“If circumcision is as effective as the trial results suggest, and it’s available now and it certainly is cheap, then it offers, I think, a very powerful strategy for preventing the spread of this virus anywhere in the world, but particularly in Africa,” he concluded.
Fauci, however, also noted that there is a concern that men will rely on circumcision as the number one prevention tool against HIV and will subsequently let their guards down in other areas of protection, such as the use of condoms.
“It is possible that the 48 to 53 per cent reduction in HIV transmission could be negated by small decreases in condom use, or the addition of more sexual partners,” he said.
Fauci also stated that male circumcision will have no protective impact on injecting drug users or people who have receptive anal intercourse.
De Cock also expressed concerns, citing possible cultural resistance to circumcision in some parts of the globe. Plummer addressed these concerns and said that observations have been made of some
African ethics groups, traditionally against circumcision, have come to the conclusion themselves that it is beneficial, “and in many incidences have started to get their kids circumcised just on their own.”
I had oral sex (unprotected) about 3 days. A day later, had a mild sore throat, which only lasted one day. Now I have swollen tonsils with white spots. I do not have any symptoms or any otherwise, so far. I work with children and many of them have recently been sick with fever and cold (last week). And I am in a foreign country and I'm not sure what her or could be. Any suggestions?
strepp sounds like that is highly contagious. although not a vd. reach an immediate document and always use protection, unless a long-term monogamous relationship. value their own health and life faster than 30 seconds to be destroyed. dead last Once you are wrong. many people have been symptoms (especially w / herpes) in 24 hours. and, depending on what type of contract that herpes can cause severe nerve and muscle pain before, during and after a break out.
Ok I've been very paranoid about HIV caught the last couple of days. About 5 months I gave and received oral sex with a woman at a party. I'm a man. I have only had one sexual partner, apart from that and that was a serious relationship. About a week and a half after I became very ill with high fever. I found a wound on my penis and started to test everything. Turns out I have HSV-1, which is herpes. I had a hard enough time dealing with it. Lately I've been paranoid to have HIV. My herpes outbreaks have been constant since my diagnosis. I lost a few pounds. (Usually weigh around 170 and now I'm around 160) until I read the symptoms of HIV and saw rash was a symptom. I have what looks like a rash on my arms, but I could have had for a while. I also get canker sores in my mouth and I think I might have a yeast infection in the mouth. Could I have HIV? Please help me get me so excited.
All these symptoms are similar to the HIV, but may be other things too, so not sure if you have the virus to get tested. I was very paranoid. And recently came in and did a test to be neg. But I did not have any symptoms, but I was still paranoid. Getting tested is actually the only way it knows for sure. He also said he had only one sexual partner, and has had oral sex with someone does not guarantee you will be safe from the infection. ll that is needed once. I'm sure you're a bit paranoid though, because the chances of contracting HIV from oral form that is less than relations sex. So stop worry and go get tested!
Treatment for genital herpes Symptoms Of Genital Herpes- Kno
This is so awkward to do, but I have a sore on my lips and tongue, which occurred a few days after oral sex preformed on an individual and the sores hurt very, very bad, so I wonder if family planning were standard tests free, i cannot pay much more And I will not go with my parents, I'm only sixteen. I'm so scared, please help me. It even sounds like an STD?
Yes, please go to family planning. And do not panic. They will help. This is what we're here. Just tell them you do not have health insurance, and then you can not pay either in full or make a donation to them (10-20 dollars is good, if you must). Also, tell them you want to get the pill and given one years free! In this way, you will not have to go back for an abortion or anything else later. Also, will take charge of any STD you might have hired. Call Now! They are there to help. And do not pay attention to people saying Planned Parenthood is bad:). It is a great service for women to take control of their sexual health and not be afraid.
I had unprotected sex one month and few days ago. After one month and few days I suffered from flu but the symptoms were caf, no fever, no head ach, thick nose fluid and no rash, no swollen lymph nodes. Can we say is it early symptom of Hiv aids?
Not really. It takes anywhere from 3-6 months for the hiv virus to go through the incubation period within a person’s system after exposure before a person could even begin to sero-convert and begin to produce anti-bodies to the hiv virus. Now that we have better hiv testing methods, I would recommend that the individual test with the rapid-oral test that gives accurate results within about 20 minutes and doesn’t require giving any blood. The individual can now go to any lgbt center for a referral as to where to get the rapid-oral test or the standard hiv test.
Good luck.
